Meet Our Staff

Betsy Hochberg, MSW, LICSW


Betsy is a clinical social worker who has extensive experience working with birth and adoptive families. She began her work in the adoption field 25 years ago after adopting her daughters and has been the Director of Adoption Resources for the past 15 years. In her role as Director, Betsy has spoken widely about adoption-related issues and has served on the boards of RESOLVE New England and Adoption Professionals Association of Massachusetts. Betsy’s warmth and sense of humor are appreciated by all who work with her. 

Rebecca Cohen, BA

Program Manager

Becca joined the agency in 2012 having previously worked with children and families in western Massachusetts. She graduated from UMass Amherst with an undergraduate degree in sociology and education and is currently pursuing a masters degree in clinical social work from Simmons College. When you call Adoption Resources, you will often be greeted by Becca. Among other tasks, she manages the office and keeps Adoption Resources well organized.

Marty Levy, MSW, LCSW

Birth Parent Social Worker

Marty Levy is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with a masters degree in social work from the University of Tennessee. She is an experienced social worker and has been working in the field of adoption for more than 20 years. Her expertise lies in the relationship she develops with birth parents, enabling them to process and sort through their options and make an adoption plan that is in the best interest of their child and themselves. Marty also has worked extensively with pre-adoptive families during the matching process through labor and delivery, surrender, and forward as everyone’s lives evolve. Marty is the go-to person to assist families in the development of their albums and letters for birth parents.

Janet Eckler, MSM, MEd, LCSW

Home Study Social Worker

Janet Eckler is an adoption social worker and has been working at Adoption Resources for nearly three years. Janet has thirty years of experience in the field of adoption, having worked in both the public and private sectors. Prior to her home study and post-placement work with adoptive families, Janet was employed for a number of years at the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, the licensing agency for adoption programs in Massachusetts.  Janet is also an adoptive mom. In addition to her work with Adoption Resources, Janet is a special education teacher working with students in elementary school. Janet has a masters degree in management (MSM) in human services administration from Lesley University and a masters degree (MEd) in special educationfrom Lesley University. She is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and also licensed to teach regular and special education

Susan Ladd, MSW, LICSW

Home Study Social Worker

Susan Ladd is a licensed independent social worker (LICSW) with a masters degree in social work from Boston College. She holds a BSW from Millersville State University. Susan is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and has worked with adoptive families for more than 20 years. She also works as a medical social worker. Susan has three children; her daughter was adopted from China

Ava Sarafan, MSW, LICSW

Home Study Social Worker

Ava Sarafan is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) with a masters degree from Simmons Graduate School of Social Work. Ava joined Adoption Resources in June 2015. For more than 25 years she has worked with families who are pursing their dream of adoption. In addition, she volunteers at RESOLVE, speaking about international adoption to prospective adoptive families. She is passionate about her work and feels fortunate to have found such a fulfilling career. Ava is an adoptive parent of two children from China.

Carol Sheingold, MSW, LICSW

Home Study Social Worker

Carol Sheingold is a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) with a masters degree in social services from Bryn Mawr College. Active in adoption practice for almost 25 years, she began working for Adoption Resources in 1991, soon after she and her husband adopted their daughter. A parent by birth as well, she brings to her practice the experience of bio-adoptive parenting as well as her years of getting to know hundreds of adoptive families. She thoroughly enjoys her work and her long history with Adoption Resources.She is a member of NASW and Adoption Professionals Association of Massachusetts.
